CHRIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH AND FIELD HOUSE, corner of West High St. and Church Ave.
In 1786, following early missionary work, a congregation was gathered for worship. A document was
drafted by the group marking the formation of Christ Church, which was formally recognized by the Diocese of New York on June
27, 1787.
The original church was erected between 1787 and 1791 in Ballston Center. This church was taken down
and rebuilt on Front Street in Ballston Spa, a major tourist center because of the reputed benefits of the mineral springs.
It was consecrated August 11, 1818. Soon Christ Church began to outgrow its building. In 1835 the present location was purchased
to build a new church. After construction of the Rectory, the beautiful gothic structure was constructed that is now our church
home. Its corner stone was laid on October 5, 1860, with work completed in March 1862.
This English Gothic style church, completed in 1862, was designed by architect Richard Upjohn &
Co., NYC, and features a tall spire, exquisite rose window and side buttresses. The Federal style Field House, c. early 1800's,
and formerly known as "Peacock House" was renamed for Rev. Robert Field, pastor for 22 years.
Our Outreach Center, a New York State Armory until purchased by Christ Church in 1873, is across
the street. This building served for over a hundred years as the Sunday School and meeting house, hosting church dinners
and other church gatherings. It now houses Christ Episcopal Church Community Outreach Programs. Noah's Attic and the
Food Pantry are staffed by volunteers.
